Ohio Squirrels Finish 3rd at 5th Annual Athens Showdown

Ohio Squirrels traveled to Athens, OH this past weekend to participate in the 5th Annual Athens Showdown hosted by Ohio University.

First game was on Saturday against Northern Illinois. Strong speed and fierce defense allowed the Squirrels to jump out on top 6-1 in the first half. Squirrels used their lead to work on fundamentals and specific plays and ended up winning 8-1 against the Huskies.

Second game on Saturday was against Bowling Green State University. The Falcon's depth allowed them to keep up with the Squirrels during the first quarter but soon enough the Squirrels speed and anticipation hurt them. Strong goalie was played by Steve Coupland to hold the Falcons to 5 goals. The Squirrels ended up winning 15-5 and they looked forward to the host club, Ohio University Bobcats, next.

Third game was the last game on Saturday against Ohio University. Knowing that OU had a strong counter attack, the Squirrels were able to anticipate it from the start. Not letting one counter attack stop them, the Squirrels managed to stay with the mighty Bobcats throughout the first half. Soon enough, Ohio University's developed sharpshooters were able to penetrate their Squirrels defense they took a small lead going into the 4th quarter. Squirrels tried to make a run back but couldn't break through their defensive prowl. The Squirrels ended up losing 10-6 in a learning experience they would use down the road.

Sunday's game brought the Squirrels against their masters rival, Cleveland Water Polo Club. Right from the start, the Squirrels used their anticipation to break through Cleveland's defense. Steve Coupland had another tremendous game only allowing Cleveland to score 2 goals, 1 of them within the first minute of the game. Squirrels jumped on them hard with constant motion on the offense end. Squirrels ended up winning 11-2.

Thanks to Ohio Univesrity to hosting another great tournament. We'll see ya'll in Tennessee.
